Genre Challenge

Samantha at Bookworms and Tea Lovers is hosting:

There are 12 basic genres and she wants us to get reading outside our comfort zones. It runs from November 1, 2008 - November 1, 2009 I'm going to do option A, which is "Read 10 books, drop the genre you read the most and one of your own choosing." I'm dropping horror because I'm a big wimp and I'd say that my beloved chick lit is basically romance, so I'll leave it out, too.

Here's my list (subject to change):

1. Crime - The Crime Writer by Gregg Hurwitz
2. Detective - T
he Case of the Missing Books by Ian Sansom
3. Mystery - And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
4. Thriller - Vodka Neat by Anna Blundy
5. Science Fiction - A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
6. Action/adventure - Casino Royale by Ian Fleming
7. Fantasy - The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander
8. Realistic - Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O'Nan
9. Historical - The Sealed Letter by Emma Donoghue
10. Western - The Chili Queen by Sandra Dallas

What about A Wrinkle in Time for Fantasy?

Hmmm, that's an idea, thanks! That's one of those every-children's-librarian-should-read ones I've never gotten to.

I'm not completely sure, because the lines are quite close, but I'd say the Case of the Missing Books is more of a mystery than of a Detective. But it might be close, so feel free.

Definitely try A Wrinkle in Time. I'll be back to see what else you pick, as I'm planning to try it too. I'm looking at your western title to start.

I read the desciptions again, and now I think it is a detective. I guess it's hard to tell the difference.

Raidergirl - Yeah, I posted it one way and then the other! But it sounds like it focuses on the librarian and his rather bungling attempts, so I figured it went in detective. And then it freed me up for Agatha Christie - I've been meaning to read that one for years.

The Chili Queen is also on my Book Awards list for the Spur Award and it sounds like great fun, I'm looking forward to it. Turns out I picked 2 Spur Awards - I never would've thought I'd pick 2 Westerns!

Thanks for seconding a Wrinkle in Time!

well, you definitley need to read Christie! Oh, how wonderful to have her whole collection yet to read.

I think I'll read Shane for the western. It's a classic and it's short! I even read a review last night somewhere and it was recommended. I can remember my sister read it in high school. I only remember because she made a cross stitch picture to go with it.

I'd forgotten Shane was a book. A cross stitch picture of it - that's quite a project! :)

I believe I read Murder on the Orient Express when I was a kid, but it's a bit hazy. So I'm almost 100% Christie-free. :)

As you can see, I've put A Wrinkle in Time in Sci Fi - it just seems to fit better with the time-travel aspect. But I'm definitely taking the recommendation! :)
