Need help picking a book!

I had to give up on The Hakawati for the Orbis Terrarum Challenge (9 books by 9 authors from different countries), I just couldn't get into it and it was looming over me and I decided that even for a challenge, reading still has to be fun, not a chore. But now I need another book for the challenge and I want to be sure it's a good one (not that The Hakawati was bad, it just wasn't for me). So, if you have any recommendations of books that blew you away, please leave a comment!

The author can't be from any of these countries, as I have them covered:

Ireland
England
Iran
Australia
Germany

    Try Shizuko's Daughter by Kyoko Mori (if my mind serves me correctly) It's Japanese obviously.

    That book came out this week. I read an ARC. It was pretty good. I think you could say she's from the former Soviet Union, I'm sure you could find something more specific. Sorry I don't know off hand!

    Peony in Love by Lisa See, she's Chinese American so I don't know if tht qualifies.

    Have you read Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie from Nigeria? It's very good, and would be an award winner as well.

    Shadow Family by Miyabe was a great little mystery I read earlier this year.

    An Italian mystery series by Andrea Camilleri is really great.

    One of my top reads from last year was Ah, But Your Land is Beautiful by Alan Paton. It's set in South Africa, and told from several different viewpoints. Here's a link to my review on LT:

    I love Kitchen and Goodbye Tsugumi, both by Banana Yoshimoto (Japan).

    I just fell in love with Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones (New Zealand)

    Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky is amazing (France)
